Dependency

Many times I’ve found myself in the place I currently sit, which is right before a crossroads with several paths to choose. In nearly every situation I can see the path that continues the status quo, the paths that offer a couple variations of “newness” but then there is the one road that scares me the most- the road that takes you higher. This is a course riddled with uncertainty, obstacles and intimidation. As if you’re standing at the base of a mighty mountain looking up and thinking there is no way this mission can be accomplished. Nonetheless, this path offers the most significant victory. Ever so often we’re presented with an opportunity in our life that seems just like that; an insurmountable objective. Sometimes these paths appear too daunting to even consider, but I’m reminded that the roads calling us higher are a true hallmark of God’s love (Psalm 121:1-2). For in those journeys we develop faith and character beyond our times of ease.

We were not designed for lives of self-sufficiency. We were designed for dependency. Like the vine and the branches, we were created to remain with our Heavenly Father - to hold his hand through every season, walking bravely down every path we begin (John 15:5). The road that calls us higher may seem daunting and overwhelming, but in our weakness we are given strength (Isaiah 40:29) to move towards a victory that brings glory to the Father. At the base of those crossroads, choose the route which will require the most faith and dependency. Do not count your resources beforehand- trust in the Lord’s provision and move higher towards the character and faith of the Christian calling.
