The Laborer
A great challenge of mine, especially in times of professional scarcity, is to believe in the impact of my work. To sincerely feel that what I do is meaningful. A junior partner of mine recently asked me, “How does selling suits really honor God?” At face value, the questions stumped me too, but a clear answer is revealed to us in the book of Psalms (vs. 127:1):
“Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it will labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the City, the watchman stays awake in vain”
When we build our businesses - our careers, our relationships, our marriages - with the foundation of Christ, we build not for the world, but for eternal glory. It is hard to lift our gaze out of the trenches we sew in, knowing we are reaping for the Kingdom as true witnesses to God’s strength in us. But when the beauty of His promises sink in, and I remember that I do not have to labor in vain because He is with me, my job no longer becomes a burden but now is a mission.
“I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth” Romans 9:17
