Thrice
When I was a teenager, a song came out by a rock band named Thrice titled, “Come All You Weary”. Even though Thrice was not what you would call a “Christian band”, the song’s lyrics outline Matthew 11:28:
Come all you weary with your heavy loads
Lay down your burdens, find rest for your souls
‘Cause my yoke is easy and my burden is kind
I’ll take yours upon me and you can take my mine
Back then these words meant nothing to me- I had no idea that they were biblical and represented the words of Jesus. But it is a beautiful song that I listened to constantly and looking back I think of the effect that it had on my discovery of faith. Especially when I connected the dots seeing the same lyrics inside the bible!
What this made me realize is how profoundly universal the Word is. How the content of the scriptures remains timeless and relevant throughout humanity. That someone with no faith background can read (or hear!) the words of the bible and feel moved so deeply because the words of Jesus spoke to the core of all mankind.
In this same way we also have the opportunity to be a witness for Jesus Christ by sharing the gospel outside of scriptural format. Would I have received the message of “Come All You Weary” if it was presented to me as a Christian song? At the time, probably not. But the medium stripped everything away except for the beauty of the words which spoke to releasing burdens and finding rest for the soul. I bet we can all get behind that! The song represented a “Trojan Horse” for me beginning my faith inquiry. We never know when a shared message will help us do the same for others.
